Blank Canvas-Janet Sage

-->

A blank canvas no more and no less
Yet what a blessing to a virgin eye
She hesitates to lift the pen, the brush or the chalk
What will the outcome of such movement evoke? =
There’s fear to take the pen in hand
There’s no way to correct a mistake that’s made
Can’t erase the stroke, it can smudge or bleed through
Be it black, red or blue – what is she to do?

Swallowing hard, she chooses some chalk
Her hand is shaking as the first mark is made
The shadowy color brings life to the board
It flows like a river, like an eagle it soars

Hysterically happy, she sees what’s to come
Her oils are so vivid – the water colors soft
They stream over the canvas like a fresh summer rain
It’s becoming a picture, a song, a refrain

Her palate is dappled with intensely rich tones
She blends them with care to paint what’s in her heart
But now manic in mind, she swirls to extreme
Where’s the color all going – is this only a dream?

Captured in frenzy she grasps at the paint
Her need for perfection – what a terrible curse
Just moments ago with creation in sight
Her masterpiece sang in a song of delight

But where is it all going – this gift of her soul
She throws all the paint in a blind fit of rage
Her laughter breaks through the tears she must shed
For her efforts have failed to hold down the beast’s head

His merciless torment has again torn her down
This one chance to create has been buried again
Spinning in fury she falls to the floor in despair
How often he’s captured her in his dark lair

The sun bids goodbye as the darkness takes ‘or
The grasp of the beast has let go for this day
She sighs with exhaustion, the tempest has passed
The room will get cleaned just like the last…….

……..A blank canvas, no more and no less
Yet what a blessing to a virgin eye
She hesitates to lift the pen, the brush or the chalk
What will the outcome of such movement evoke?
